How seductive is freshly baked homemade bread?
Breaking the hot crust straight out of the hot oven, steam puffs out of the bread and that’s about the time when your own spirit ascends to heaven. YUM.
In this episode, we head to Comiso, a place near Ragusa in Sicily. Lucia and Giancarlo run a guest house called Il Filo di Paglia.
They’ve invited their sisters, brothers, their nephews and nieces for a day of baking. Using traditional methods, it’s all done by hand, wooden implements and a stone oven.
Watch how pane di case (house bread), focaccia and cassata are made!
What a party!
During our stay in Sicily, we ate a lot (x1000) of pizzas at Salvo's pizzeria. We like pizzas but never imagined eating that many, day-in and day-out. Why was the pizza so addictive and so good?
In one word, it's the simplicity... but done very well. Salvo's pizzeria Convivio Food Devotion uses local organic Sicilian ingredients which includes Sicilian flour, local vegetables, meat, local cheese and tomatoes. Simple, right?
Pizza’s one of the easiest things to make in a kitchen but wow, the Convivio pizzas blew us away… EVERY SINGLE TIME we ate their pizzas and let me tell you, we ate there a lot!
Be warned, you’re gonna get pizza envy watching this one!
The last episode in this season is an homage to Sicily's food culture and food tradition; food nostalgia to be specific.
Salvo is a proud local Sicilian from Modica, a humble ancient city situated at the southern tip of Italy. He reminisces over his childhood when everything he ate was handmade by his mamma and nonna.
As society becomes more digitally connected and we seem to have less time to prepare our own meals, pursuing a more convenient, faster, busier life, what are we leaving behind?
This episode will take you on a journey of warm nostalgia, rustic bread-making and familial bond. Enjoy watching a Sicilian family make home-made bread the traditional way.
